Trafford looking to become first-choice club keeper to boost England hopes
James Trafford accepts he has to be the first-choice goalkeeper at club level if he wants to be Englands number one.
Trafford is one of three keepers in Thomas Tuchels World Cup squad, working with Dean Henderson as Jordan Pickfords understudy.
The 23-year-old had a difficult season with Manchester City, signing to be their number one last summer only to see the club bring in Gianluigi Donnarumma, who became Pep Guardiolas first choice.
Trafford, who has been linked with a move away from the Etihad this summer, said: I dont think there has been a goalie start for any of the top nations that isnt a number one at the club, so going off history, Id say, yeah.
Asked whether it means he could move this summer, Trafford said: You never know. Whether I move, whether I dont move, I do whats right for me and my career.
Despite his frustration at having to sit on the bench during Citys Premier League campaign, Trafford was in goal as the club won both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.
Trafford added: Its obviously been very challenging the past season, but looking back, Ive learned so much, Ive developed so much.
I thought Id had a lot of experiences up to this point in my career, but this was a new experience for me in everything. It was obviously very tough.
Some days were harder than others, but the one thing I wanted to keep doing was keep winning the day and just improving every day, and because I kept doing that I came out of the season having played a part in winning the two trophies.
It was a very challenging season, but I learned a lot for myself and for going forward in my career.
